How to choose a Dubai area for a family stay

How to choose a Dubai area for a family stay

Dubai is not one place. A family that wants the beach on the doorstep, a family that wants a quiet street for the children to cycle on, and a family that wants to be near the big malls and attractions will each be happiest in a different neighbourhood. Start with how your days will actually go, then match the area to that.

Start with three questions

  • What will you do most days? Beach and pool, theme parks and malls, or school and routine if you are staying for weeks?
  • Apartment or villa? Apartments put you close to restaurants and services. Villas and townhouses give more space and often a private outdoor area.
  • Will you rent a car? Some communities are easy on foot, others work much better with a car.

If you want the beach nearby

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence are the two most obvious choices. Our Dubai Marina page describes apartments within walking distance of Dubai Marina Mall and JBR Beach. Our JBR page describes apartments right by the beach, and mentions complimentary beach access plus gym and pool use.

Palm Jumeirah is described on our site as the world’s largest man-made island, with villas and apartments available on a weekly and monthly basis. If you are considering a villa on the Palm, check what the home itself provides, because facilities differ by property.

If you want the city around you

Downtown Dubai is described as within walking distance of landmarks such as Dubai Mall and the Burj Khalifa. Business Bay is also described as close to the Burj Khalifa and near a metro station, and our listing text calls its apartments comfortable and family-friendly. City Walk is described as a modern, family-friendly community close to shopping, dining and entertainment.

If you want space and a residential feel

For more room, look at the villa and townhouse communities. Arabian Ranches 3 has fully furnished villas available monthly. Damac Hills lists townhouses and villas that are move-in ready and furnished, available for weekly and monthly stays. Dubai Hills is described as a residential community with green spaces and golf course views, popular with families and long-stay visitors seeking a quieter setting.

These communities can be more spread out than the apartment districts, so it is worth thinking about how you will get to restaurants, shops and attractions.

What to check in every family listing

  • Bedrooms and bed types. The listing shows how many guests the home sleeps and the bed layout. Count heads, not just rooms.
  • Children and house rules. Each home states its own rules on children, visitors, pets and smoking. Read them for the specific home.
  • Kitchen and laundry. Many of our listings show cookware, a kettle, a toaster and laundry facilities in their amenity list. Check the listing for the home you like.
  • Safety items. Many listings list a first aid kit. If you need something specific, such as baby equipment, ask before you book rather than assuming.
  • Check-in and check-out times. Listings show them. If you land at an awkward hour, ask what is possible.

Each home is different, so always read the listing for what is included in that particular home.

A short list to carry into your search

  • Beach-first family: look at Dubai Marina and JBR.
  • City-first family: look at Downtown Dubai, Business Bay and City Walk.
  • Space-first family: look at Arabian Ranches 3, Damac Hills and Dubai Hills.

When you are ready, browse all our stays, then narrow by area and your dates. If your stay is a month or longer, our guide to monthly stays without an annual lease covers the questions to ask before you book.
