Palm Jumeirah is a man-made island developed by Nakheel and shaped like a palm tree, with a trunk, a crescent and fronds. Apartments are mostly on the trunk, while villas and townhouses sit on the fronds. It is freehold, and area guides note that many properties have direct beach access.
Day to day, the island has its own services. Palm Jumeirah Mall, formerly called Nakheel Mall, is the main retail centre, with a Carrefour supermarket and a clinic. Al Ittihad Park runs along the trunk, and the Boardwalk and beaches suit walking, jogging and yoga. At the far end of the trunk, Atlantis The Palm has a waterpark and aquarium, and The Pointe faces it from the tip. Area guides name nurseries and Regent International School on the island, and clinics including Medcare Medical Centre.
The Palm Jumeirah Monorail runs along the trunk between Atlantis The Palm and Gateway Station, which connects to the Dubai Tram and the wider rail network. The island is linked to the mainland by road, with Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) as the main route. Taxis are widely available on the island.
The trade-offs are cost and congestion. Guides describe the lifestyle as carrying a premium price, and traffic can build at peak hours, especially around the island's entry and exit points. It is a good fit if you want beach access and an island setting for a stay of a week or longer, and you are comfortable taking a car or taxi to reach the rest of Dubai.
